Neapolitan are mostly Christians, and most of them are believers and strongly believe in God. Also, they are very family-oriented people and attached to traditions.

So during Lent, the church held beautiful Way of the Cross every Friday and many other religious services.

But the most important events begin in the Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, people could buy olive branches in front of every church and in the streets. This is a symbol of Jesus Christ's arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey.

In the churches, there was a solemn mass, during which the priest blessed the olive branches brought. The entire church waved the little branches and sang during the blessing. In larger churches there is a procession with these sprigs, the faithful took to the streets, singing, and proclaiming joy for the arrival of the Lord.

Blessing at Mass

Each Italian province has its tradition of olive branches. As a symbol of peace, it is exchanged with relatives and friends. In Sicily, decorative palm branches are made into braided palm leaves, while in Naples, palm confetti are prepared(small compositions of iron branches decorated with flowers and sugared almonds)

After Mass, they gather with their families or loved ones. Most often, one chooses to have Sunday dinner in a restaurant (unless it's already prepared at home) and afterward, one goes out on the town for some sweet with good coffee. (Because one has a second stomach for sweets). Many Italians take to the street to go for walks, stores, viewpoints, and parks. There they also meet up with friends and chat with each other like this! On this day is why you can see a lot of people with palm branches, everyone carries them with them throughout the day, and they are kept until Easter Sunday.

Easter Palms

This is how Holy Week begins. You can see olive twigs everywhere, in the streets, in the churches, in the hands of small children...

It's a beautiful day, which is full of joy and gatherings with friends or family!!!

So be thankful for the little things and don't throw away the branches, let them stay with you until Easter.

It is an amazing day to celebrate in your own way. Go out for coffee, pizza, or other treats. In addition, the city is so full that you should be patient and enjoy the little things, the sunshine, and the warmth radiating from other people while you wait.
